What is your guiding word for this year?

Around this time last year, my social media feeds are filled with posts from people choosing words that they meant to guide them into the New Year. They weren’t resolutions; not a list of actionable items that they wanted to make happen. Just one word. One word that seemed to mean so much more.

Resolutions were never my thing

This time of year is always full of magic and a sense of wonder. And I had never had any problem getting wrapped up in. I would enter the second week of January with more than my goals. I had set resolutions.

But resolutions were always a challenge for me. Life would creep in and happen so quickly. By the end of February, I had not achieved any of them. In fact, I had completely forgotten that they even existed.

I started asking around

I reached out to members of my tribe who had made similar posts to find out what they were. They came through, as they always do. They shared with me that a guiding word (or two) represented their hopes, dreams and ambitions for the year.

Rather than a list that could get lost or forgotten in a journal, this word could be posted all around their house, office or anywhere else they needed as a constant reminder of what they intended to make happen this year.

The beauty is in the simplicity

One word that represented all that I wanted to make happen over the course of the year was simple enough. Something that I could look at on a regular basis and be reminded of all the magic and wonder of this time of year AND of all the actions I wanted to take in my business. And I knew exactly what the word needed to be.

You see I was on a mission to do more for my tribe. To give them what they felt they needed to level up in their business and, heck, their life. I wanted to meet them where they were at. I wanted to be sure that everything I was doing would provide true value to and be in service of them. And so I picked my word: SERVE.

With my word chosen, I went to work

The only way to provide true value was the chat with my tribe about they truly needed. I spoke with them at events I attended. We connected within our Fempire Business Building Community on Facebook. Anyone who could spare a moment or two to dive deeper graciously allowed me to chat with them over the phone.

(If you were one of the people who made time for me, let me say, as an aside, thank you from the bottom of my heart.)

And what I heard from them was that they needed a process to guide them in growing their business. They told me that, while they loved doing what they were doing, sometimes they felt like they were drifting aimlessly. They confided that when it came to figure out how they were going to take their business to the next level, they couldn’t see how the pieces went together.

A process you say? I have that!

I happily shared all of the resources I had or knew of that I thought might be able to help them on their journey. We worked hard to create conversation starters in our Facebook group and content on our blog that would be of value. However, I knew I could do more.

It’s easy to find many blog posts or courses about how to get started, but knowing what to do with all of this information (like how to get leads and turn them into revenue) is not as straightforward. I need to put together a roadmap of actionable steps beyond all these resources to truly serve my tribe. And so I created the Level Up Bootcamp.

The lightbulb moment

Realizing that I had a process that I was using in my own business that would be of value to my tribe was a lightbulb moment for me. It seemed like something that I should have concluded so long ago. However, without that simple act of choosing a word, I may have never stumbled on it.

Knowing the resolutions weren’t my thing, I likely would have kept my head down and kept working my process year over year without tapping into the magic that comes every January. But choosing a word changed that. It is a way for me to tap into the wonder of the New Year, and it turned out to be a crucial step in figuring out how to do more for the Canadian women in business that I want to empower.

Do you feel like you’re not making the progress you want in your business? Feel unmotivated or uninspired? Struggling to find your way?

Overwhelmed by the transition to entrepreneurship?

I’ve been there. When I left the corporate and small business worlds to start my own business, I didn’t know what I was in for. I saw other women living lives that I wanted to be mine, and wondered, “How are they doing it?” Knowing something had to give, I totally changed the way I’m running and building my business.

As a mother, blogger, mentor, speaker and business owner, I am used to balancing the demands of many roles. It is hard to “do it all,” and I have learned how to adjust to those expectations. Stick with me and you’ll be diving into your business with fresh eyes and a growth-centered mindset faster than you ever imagined!

It all came to a head in the Fall of 2015. With my daughter’s autism diagnosis and my postpartum depression following my son’s birth, my Spring/Summer that year had been pretty rough. I was feeling pretty kicked around — to say the least. As I was crawling out of the dark and twisty places life had cornered me in that year, I knew that everything had changed.

For many reasons, I couldn’t go back to my corporate life. One of the biggest reasons was that my perspective on how I was going to live my life had changed. A shift had happened. My time away from my children was going to be spent doing things that I was passionate about. Doing things that got me pumped about life. In May of 2016, I went out on my own and started my business. It was great. I was finally doing things that had me pumped about my time away from my kids. I had the flexibility to spend more time with them. At the end of the day, I had the energy to work in my household and my marriage.

But, while I was living my passion and excited about my life again, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses. Previously, I was a teacher, a sales professional, marketing leader and client services manager. By setting clear objectives, I succeeded in each role, even though they were in different industries.

But being an entrepreneur was a whole new world. I felt the loneliness. I had self-doubt. I didn’t know where to start…and I wasn’t the only one in this boat.

Whether I’m out speaking to a room full of female entrepreneurs or leading a workshop, one of the things that I hear over and over again from these amazing women is how great it is to be out from behind their desks and surrounded by a group of like-minded women. And as our conversation continues, it becomes clear that they are looking for a tribe of women that they can connect and collaborate with regularly in an environment that is welcoming, encouraging and safe enough to let their walls down and share. I needed a community like this too. One that encourages fellow members as they conquer fears, overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams. A tribe that leaves me with a new comfort level and the confidence I’m craving to expand my growth and limits — both personally and professionally.

And most importantly, I wanted a place that would offer me more than inspiration. One that would give me the actionable advice, education and mentorship, support and accountability that we all need.

And from these conversations and my own needs, Fempire Builders was born.

You see, it’s not just me. And it’s not just you. We are not alone. And when we come together, it’s a powerful thing. With the Fempire Builders community supporting me and holding me accountable, I have experienced the business growth that previously I had only dreamed about.

Just as it has been for other Fempire Builders, it will be the same for you, too. Wait and see!
