What inspired you to become a Fempire Builder?

I felt drawn to Fempire because I could see the level of professionalism and dedication of its members. It’s a community of women who are serious about learning the skills to take their business to the next level. It’s more than a place to network, it’s a place to learn and grow professionally. I was particularly interested in this community because of its emphasis on continued learning, particularly through online courses.

What’s the best part about owning your own business?

Being a business owner allows me to create the lifestyle I want. That means having the flexibility to work on projects that I love, make my own hours and break away from the routine of the corporate world. There’s always something new to learn, and someone new to meet.

Every day is different, but most days are spent working on client projects, networking online or in-person and continuously learning new skills relevant to my profession. Expanding my industry knowledge is a top priority for me, so I can offer the best service to my clients.

Who do you count on for help?

There are certain industry experts who I follow online. I also have a close network of entrepreneur friends and accountability partners who can refer me to others when I need help.

Have you ever had to sacrifice something at home for work? Or vice versa?

Yes – of course! The life of an entrepreneur is full of sacrifice. It’s the price we pay while
we are building our business. Most of the time it means working extra long hours to get
things done. While our friends and family are out having fun, we are often hard at work
preparing for the next project. At times (many times) we sacrifice our income. Starting a
busines is always lean in the first few years until we figure out how to find our ideal
clients.

What do you do on a day off? Tell us about your hobbies.

A day off is usually spent with my family. We love nature so we’re often at the park on a
hike or riding our bikes. We also love hanging out with Ginger, our little Taco Terrier puppy (part Toy-Fox Terrier, part Chihuahua). My favourite hobby is decorating. I enjoy rearranging our rooms or finding new accessories and artwork to give our place a fresh look.

What does the future look like for you and your business?

In the future, I hope to build a larger network of educators and entrepreneurs who want
to level up their digital communications. I’m working towards becoming a leading expert
on Presentation Design and Content Marketing.

Any tips for other females thinking of starting a business?

Try out several different networking groups and business associations then narrow it
down to 2 or 3 that fit well for you. You’ll gain more traction when you focus on a few,
instead of spreading yourself too thin.

Take time to plan and figure things out. Really think about what you want your life
to look like and choose wisely. Ask yourself if the projects you take on will provide the
time and income to provide that lifestyle. Save your money and hire professionals to
take care of the tasks that make you get stuck. You’ll move forward a lot faster.

What is your “WHY” behind your business/being an entrepreneur?

I decided to become an entrepreneur so I could work the hours that I want, using skills
that make me feel energized. If you spend most of your lifetime at work, it might as well
be work that you can get excited about. Build a business you love, not a business you hate! My deepest “why” is that I don’t want to go back to the soul-crushing corporate world. I feel so passionate about this that I actually wrote a book about it called “Get Your Side-Hustle On” (shameless plug!) It takes you on my personal journey from employee to entrepreneur and how to build your network.

Outside of your business, what’s a dream of yours?

Ummm… I’ve always wanted to go to Bali on a private jet, and stay at a 5-star resort. I’ll
gladly take donations any time.

Give us your best self-care/self-love technique.

I love curling up on the sofa with hot cocoa, watching cheesy Hallmark movies. (Don’t
judge me.) Bubble baths are also fun.

What’s your favourite tool?

My favourite tool is Canva (surprise, surprise!). I love it because it’s like a digital
scrapbook. Even if you can’t draw, it gives you all the images and ideas so you can pull
things together that look great. So much fun!

Favourite Book?

One of my favourite books is “How to Win Friends an Influence People” by Dale
Carnegie. This man was a master of managing human relationships with kindness and compassion. If everyone in the world followed his advice this world would be a totally different place.

At the end of the day, what do you want us to know about you and your business?

I want people to feel comfortable with me. I’m a very down-to-earth person who is
approachable. If you have a question or idea, come to me and we’ll find the best
solution for you. I’m not one of those hyped up influencer types with the designer
clothes and re-touched photos. I’m the girl next door who you can trust. When it all
comes down to it, we usually do business with people who we can relate to.

Connect With Female Business Owner, Antoinette

How do you keep going on those days when you’re left questioning what you got yourself into when you started a business? What would you tell another fempire builder feeling that way right now?

Go out and talk to a few entrepreneurs who have reached the goals you are working
towards. Find out what it took to get to that position and how they made it through. And
when you are really feeling discouraged, try to imagine yourself in your previous life.
Maybe it was the corporate world, full of office politics, long commutes and long hours.
Do you really want to go back to that life? Could you even bear it? If not, take a deep
breath and press on!

Overwhelmed by the transition to entrepreneurship?

I’ve been there. When I left the corporate and small business worlds to start my own business, I didn’t know what I was in for. I saw other women living lives that I wanted to be mine, and wondered, “How are they doing it?” Knowing something had to give, I totally changed the way I’m running and building my business.

As a mother, blogger, mentor, speaker and business owner, I am used to balancing the demands of many roles. It is hard to “do it all,” and I have learned how to adjust to those expectations. Stick with me and you’ll be diving into your business with fresh eyes and a growth-centered mindset faster than you ever imagined!

It all came to a head in the Fall of 2015. With my daughter’s autism diagnosis and my postpartum depression following my son’s birth, my Spring/Summer that year had been pretty rough. I was feeling pretty kicked around — to say the least. As I was crawling out of the dark and twisty places life had cornered me in that year, I knew that everything had changed.

For many reasons, I couldn’t go back to my corporate life. One of the biggest reasons was that my perspective on how I was going to live my life had changed. A shift had happened. My time away from my children was going to be spent doing things that I was passionate about. Doing things that got me pumped about life. In May of 2016, I went out on my own and started my business. It was great. I was finally doing things that had me pumped about my time away from my kids. I had the flexibility to spend more time with them. At the end of the day, I had the energy to work in my household and my marriage.

But, while I was living my passion and excited about my life again, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses. Previously, I was a teacher, a sales professional, marketing leader and client services manager. By setting clear objectives, I succeeded in each role, even though they were in different industries.

But being an entrepreneur was a whole new world. I felt the loneliness. I had self-doubt. I didn’t know where to start…and I wasn’t the only one in this boat.

Whether I’m out speaking to a room full of female entrepreneurs or leading a workshop, one of the things that I hear over and over again from these amazing women is how great it is to be out from behind their desks and surrounded by a group of like-minded women. And as our conversation continues, it becomes clear that they are looking for a tribe of women that they can connect and collaborate with regularly in an environment that is welcoming, encouraging and safe enough to let their walls down and share. I needed a community like this too. One that encourages fellow members as they conquer fears, overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams. A tribe that leaves me with a new comfort level and the confidence I’m craving to expand my growth and limits — both personally and professionally.

And most importantly, I wanted a place that would offer me more than inspiration. One that would give me the actionable advice, education and mentorship, support and accountability that we all need.

And from these conversations and my own needs, Fempire Builders was born.

You see, it’s not just me. And it’s not just you. We are not alone. And when we come together, it’s a powerful thing. With the Fempire Builders community supporting me and holding me accountable, I have experienced the business growth that previously I had only dreamed about.

Just as it has been for other Fempire Builders, it will be the same for you, too. Wait and see!
