Over the past 10 months, I have gotten media exposure and speaking opportunities as a result of that exposure. Increasing your profile through publishing a book, speaking, media appearances, etc. can all be great vehicles for establishing yourself as an expert.

My goal to increase my visibility began with me entering a speaking competition and delivering a talk for hundreds of people. Knowing that if my talk was good enough, there was a chance that Goalcast would pick it up and distribute it to its millions of followers.

We don’t always have to go at it alone, sometimes it is worth letting experts work their magic to help you shine.

I could have written and delivered a talk all on my own, which I have done many times in the past. But my gut told me to seek out help from an expert. I worked with Rina Rovinelli, the co-founder of Speaker Slam. Not only is she awesome, but she knows exactly what Goalcast is looking for and could help me come up with a talk that would get their attention. After Rina and I met, I wrote a completely different talk then what I was originally planning out. Goalcast picked it up and I can happily report that I went viral!

My work with experts didn’t end there. Next, I began working with Jennifer Singh, a media expert, to help me get media exposure from my Goalcast video. She helped me learn how to put pitches together for the media and land an interview on CBC Metro Morning.

What have I learned?

Be strategic: Start by defining what you want.

  • Do you want to grow your community and following?
  • Build credibility?
  • What impact do you want to have?

Once you have gotten clear on what you want, think about what types of exposure makes sense for you to reach these goals. There are always events, guest interviews or workshops that you could do or speak on. However, if they are not aligned with your goals, it is okay to turn these opportunities down. You can’t take on every single thing that is thrown at you. And…you don’t have too.

Of course, the most important piece of any strategic plan is: Getting into ACTION!

“You don’t go from zero to Oprah. There’s a whole bunch of milestones in between. But if you figure out how to be of service to all of those people along the way, that’s how you win!”

Giovanni Marsico, the founder of the Archangel Summit

It takes action after action to build your profile and your business. So…

  • What’s your strategy?
  • Does it involve experts?
  • What is the next action you are going to take?

With anything you do in your business, you need to have a roadmap to ensure that you aren’t just spinning your wheels. And getting exposure for your business is no different. But don’t forget to have fun with it! Take action, try things out, evaluate your results and make shifts as needed. Last but not least, don’t take yourself too seriously as you go!
