Helping families have fun together with Darcy Herring

Meet Darcy Herring of Darcy Herring Coaching, one of amazing Fempire Builders community members. Darcy is a Family and Life Strategy Coach based out of Durham/Markham, ON, and we are thrilled to feature her in this week’s FemSpotlight. Read more about her business in her own words below.

What is your business/company all about?

My company is about reducing overwhelm, anxiety and stress in people’s lives by creating effective, specific and purposeful solutions.  I work with families to help them solve problems and challenges that are reoccurring in their lives. The ones they feel like they have tried everything, and now they have no idea where to start to look for solutions.

What inspired you to become a Fempire Builder?

The sense of community that surrounds the Fempire Builders.  This world is not meant to go through alone, and having a community around each and every one of us will lift us all up. It allows each of us to shine our own light, reach our amazing potential and create a better world for all.

What’s the best part about owning your own business?

The best part of owning my own business is the influence I have on my own children and my family.  I love the life lessons my boys are learning from watching me, and participating in, the projects I’m doing.  I love that my 9-year-old asks me every night at bedtime how my business is going and how he can help.

Can you describe a typical day?

A typical day would start by getting my two boys up and ready for school before dropping one at the bus stop and the other at school.  Then my work day begins with catching up on emails, messages and responses from all sources (email, facebook, etc).  Clients start around 9:30 am and really give me a sense of joy and fulfillment, as I work with each to clear up challenges, create solutions and replace a sense of anxiety and overwhelm with peace, harmony and hope.

Who do you count on for help?

My coach that I work with to keep me on track and to constantly grow and move forward.  I count on my children to constantly test me, and my processes, first hand to allow experience, learning and growth.

I also count on those around me that I am continually collaborating with and bouncing ideas off of and growing and learning from each and every day.

Have you ever had to sacrifice something at home for work? Or vice versa?

I am always sacrificing time with my family for work.  When I have clients in the evening or events I’m planning or attending, I’m taking time away from my family.  I have also missed family events or dinners to fit those clients in when they need me.

What do you do on a day off? Do you even know what a day off is?

On my days off, I am generally found rearranging my house to make things function more efficiently or volunteering at one of the schools my children attend.  I like to be a part of the school community and make time each week to help out with a healthy snack and participate on school trips with each of them.

Tell us about your absolute favourite hobby.

My absolute favourite hobby is Geocaching in the fall and springtime.  Geocaching is a worldwide treasure hunt using GPS coordinates, and I have been doing it since I was a teenager with my older brothers.   My second date with my current husband was introducing him to geocaching (married 10 years now!), and now we have introduced it to our children. We love being out in nature looking for hidden treasure as a family!

If you could go back in time and tell you start-up self one thing, what would it be?

The world needs what you have to offer and the sooner you start, the more lives you can impact.

What does the future look like for you and your business?

The future looks full of wonder and amazement with a number of projects I couldn’t possibly have imagined a few years ago. I am also very excited about the quality of collaborations and connections I continue to make. They allow me to constantly push myself while helping others do the same.

Any tips for women thinking of starting a business?

You have your ideas for a reason!  Find a mentor and do small steps every day to move you forward toward your goals.

What is your “WHY” behind your business/being an entrepreneur?

My why:  I want to change the world. This world is moving too fast and in the midst of all that movement, we are losing ourselves. We are creating illness with stress, overwhelm and worry, and we are missing out on the true purpose of life.  Seeing children labelled at earlier and earlier ages to put them on medication so they sit still in class saddens me because I see the loss of creativity, the holding back of genius minds and the hardening of that youthful joy.  The cost of living pushes parents to work more and more and be absent more and more from their child’s life leaving the moments together full of discipline, homework and orders.

Children need joy, creativity, and space to be themselves in order to become productive adults in our society.  With the fast-paced life, we lose our communication skills, our connection to each other and the support we can give each other.

My why is to hear laughter again and see families having fun together by just being together, listening to each other, supporting each other and communicating to make an impact.

Outside of your business, what’s a dream of yours? Share it with us.

To take my family on a cruise.

Give us your best self-care/self-love technique.

Walking in nature and being in the sun.  I feel recharged when connecting to nature, even if it’s just in my front yard sitting in the sun and listening to the breeze through the trees on a cool autumn day.

What is your favourite app/tool for your business and why?

Snapseed is my favourite app. It allows me lots of tools for creativity in pictures and really fine tuning the photographs I want to use.

What was the best book you ever read for your life as a Fempire Builder? What was your biggest takeaway from it?

Unfu*ck Yourself,” by Gary John Bishop has been the best book I have ever read to build my Fempire.

There are many takeaways from the book – one of the biggest was:

“You are not defined by what’s inside your head.  You are what you do.  Your actions.”

At the end of the day, what do you want us to know about you and your business?

I’m all about family.  I love what I do and how I do it.  By creating specific and purposeful solutions for each family I work with, I see the world changing one step at a time toward a place of peace, acceptance for all, and harmony together.

How do you keep going on those days when you’re left questioning what you got yourself into when you started a business? What would you tell another Fempire Builder feeling that way right now?

Do something to move you forward during those days. It might be something small. Something you may even feel is insignificant, but do it. Taking action toward your goal – even when feeling like that goal is a million miles away – not only moves you closer, but also gives you the motivation to keep moving forward.
