Meet Jen Wende of Jen Wende – Breathe. Move. Connect, one of our amazing Fempire Builders community members. Jen is yoga therapist based out of Montreal, QC, and we are thrilled to feature her in this week’s FemSpotlight. Read more about her business in her own words below.
What is your business/company all about?
Mothers, who tend to keep putting themselves last, hire me to help create sustainable self-care habits so that they feel replenished and self-connected.
What inspired you to become a Fempire Builder?
The supportive community. Every Fempire Builder I have talked with has been incredible and inspiring. I don’t feel alone here and there are so many great tips to help me be successful in my business.
What’s the best part about owning your own business?
The freedom. I can put work around my life rather than my life around work.
Can you describe a typical day?
Wake up a little earlier than my daughter for a short moment of quiet and meditation to feel grounded. Be a mom and get my daughter ready for daycare. Teach private clients, workout, lunch, meetings/client or administrative/creative business work, pick up my daughter and have playful family time until night.
Who do you count on for help?
My partner, Peter. He’s amazing.
Have you ever had to sacrifice something at home for work? Or vice versa?
Yes, I turn down work because I want to be home with my family or keep a day open just for me. In the wellness business, evenings are the most popular teaching time. I sacrifice less possible work hours. I have had to pull out of working in studios almost altogether because of it.
What do you do on a day off? Do you even know what a day off is?
I am mindful to turn off my business brain, though it really is a challenge! I am usually playing with my family. We love to watch movies, do puzzles or go play in the park. You can usually catch us having a family dance party. We keep it pretty relaxed these days. As my daughter and business get older, we are excited to create more days off in the country.
Tell us about your absolute favourite hobby.
Currently Swimming. Is that a hobby? My hobbies change often, as I like to try new things.
If you could go back in time and tell you start-up self one thing, what would it be?
Talk about what you are doing more. Don’t be afraid to share it.
What does the future look like for you and your business?
It looks bright! More nature and sunshine for my family. More exposure for my business and expanding my services from stress management and self-care to deeper generational healing and personal coaching.
Any tips for women thinking of starting a business?
Believe in your worth.
What is your “WHY” behind your business/being an entrepreneur?
My particular why right now is my daughter. Being an entrepreneur allows my family the freedom it needs to create the lifestyle we love living. I believe in the work that I am doing so much that I see how important it is that my what I have to offer gets it out there, and this type of work doesn’t fit in another type of model.
Outside of your business, what’s a dream of yours? Share it with us.
To live on a tropical beach where I can paddleboard daily.
Give us your best self-care/self-love technique.
Oh, wow! This is my entire business, I have so many! Taking 3 deep breaths looking yourself in the mirror and saying I love you (or believe in you, or whatever words of encouragement you need right then)
What is your favourite app/tool for your business and why?
Namastream! This is my online studio platform. I love it because of how it functions, but more importantly, how signing up for it opened up my world of possibilities. The founders of this tool have been my biggest fans and supporters, and the entire experience has been incredibly uplifting. I wouldn’t be the same if I had gone with someone else.
What was the best book you ever read for your life as a Fempire Builder? What was your biggest takeaway from it?
The BIG LEAP. The idea of the ULP (upper limit problem). Remembering that 99% of the time after you have expanded, it is very possible you will freak out subconsciously. Breathe through it and remind yourself how worthy you are.
At the end of the day, what do you want us to know about you and your business?
I want each and every one of you to know how worthy you are of whatever it is you desire. Starting with nurturing your self-care is what will help you make your dreams come true.
How do you keep going on those days when you’re left questioning what you got yourself by starting a business? What would you tell another Fempire Builder feeling that way right now?
I pause and take a breath. I thank the fear for trying to protect me and connect with my why and what is driving me to move forward. I remind myself that these days are going to come. The most important thing is how I move through them. Always Breathe. Move Connect. You have time.
